Attend a Forum Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 PM
Join us for an entertaining and informative debate on transparency in political contributions
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizens Uniteddecision of 2010, the influence of money in American elections has skyrocketed. The decision allows corporations, unions and certain nonprofit groups to spend unlimited amounts of money to support or oppose political candidates as long as they don’t coordinate with candidates or their committees. SuperPACs and 501(c)4 organizations can hide the source of their funding, regardless of whether those sources are corporations, individuals or other special interests. This loophole creates a lack of transparency, and clouds the voters’ understanding of who’s behind the political messages presented in ads and commercials, especially during elections.
The debate is modeled after those presented by Intelligence Squared. The audience will have an opportunity to use electronic clickers to cast their vote in support or opposition of a statement about the need for campaign finance reform. After the debate, the audience will vote again. The debaters that sway audience opinion the most will win the debate.
